This Coast Guard Documented Vessel is an impressive sailing yacht commissioned to be built in 1972 by NASA Rocket Scientists/Engineers in the Annapolis area, the yachting center of the mid-coast Atlantic. Laid up by professional boat builders in Middle River, Maryland, during the height of the boat-building boom on the Chesapeake Ba. Enjoyed occasionally as a family cruising boat then sold to loving and capable Welsh couple for international sailing. Meticulously maintained; completely restored, re-powered, rebuilt, and outfitted to modern cruising specs and standards from 2005-2024.
This well cared for custom sailing yacht's circuit board boasts a few parts from NASA rocket ships. Sandpiper's hull design is a Samson adaptation of the famous Sparkman & Stephens ocean racer 'Finisterre', incorporating Annapolis racer-cruiser innovation and traditional Skipjack lines of Chesapeake working sailing vessels.
Ready-to-go as is for expedition, adventure cruising lifestyle and full-time live-aboard. The Sandpiper is truly a one of a kind vessel. Not an ounce of neglect from stem to stern. Dreamy bronze, round portholes. Bone dry and spotless bilge. Heavy displacement at 12T (22,000lbs) and 5,500lbs of lead ballast makes for a stable sea kindliness and cavernous cabin accommodations.
Brand new canvas throughout the entire boat. Secure cockpit design. Safe and seaworthy ketch-rigged with like-new sails. Ship-like interior. Nine-foot centerboard and four-foot shoal draft make this long-distance sailing ketch the perfect boat for crossing the Gulf Stream to the Bahamas next season.
The Sandpiper is presently docked in the hurricane hole of New Bern, North Carolina, safely tucked up the Neuse River and must sell due to obligations and responsibilities of owner's which will prevent them from spending further, adequate time in U.S. waters, where the boat is flagged/registered/stored while they reside in the U.K. It's been an excellent run. The Sandpiper just had a bottom job in April 2023, is literally turn-key and ready to pass the torch.
From gunk-holing in the vessel's home waters; to the Canadian maritime islands and Nova Scotia. Proven seaworthiness crossing the Gulf Stream to western Caribbean ports. The harbor's of Cuba and cruising Mexico's Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Tulum and Cancun beaches, and enjoying the east coast cruising of the United States. Well-cared for by owners for 20+ years, one of whom grew up at sea and is a professional illustrator and the other formerly in film production and currently working on refugee resettlement camps around the world.
The Sandpiper is fit to be a world cruiser in every sense of the term.
With stringers and compression post reinforcement throughout the bright and airy cabin, easy bilge and locker access, the structural integrity is notable. Marine plywood bulkheads covered in thick fiberglass are bolted to the boat's frame and integral to the hull. All are rock solid and pristine. The hull and decks are ferro-cement and have shown no signs of degradation or wear and tear in 50 years.
Ferro-cement is known for its "reef-busting" qualities and as a high pedigree material among one-off boat builders. Many vessels constructed from ferro-cement have gone on to complete long-distance voyages on treacherous waters and are still cruising their home waters today. This construction method has been proven at sea. The Sandpiper was adapted and built for the Chesapeake Bay and the Bahamas specifically.
The strength and integrity of the Sandpiper has been thoroughly upheld for 50-years. Inspected at least every three years on the hard since 2005.
A full-service marine survey valued the vessel at $40,000 in 1972 and once again in 2015. The asking price is $40,000 as is where is. The vessel is currently insured for $40,000. Extensive maintenance and upgrade logs, tools, spares parts, all available. Survey from 2015 and 1972 available upon request.
Perfect for cruising couple or family. Seaworthy and conformable. Amenities and convenience balance with tradition to create a floating home feeling down below. Spacious ship conditions down below, seaworthiness above decks, well-canvased safe rig. Offshore proven.
